Denture Specialist Advice following Tooth Extraction

Advice From Our Denture Specialist after a Tooth Extraction

When do I need to visit a denture specialist?

In a previous article we explained how the extraction procedure works. Having a tooth removed is part of the process that comes before booking in for your denture procedure with a denture specialist. This is something you would know if you had the procedure carried out after consulting a CDT (clinical dental technician). If your tooth was removed following a visit to the dentist, they would usually tell you to book in with a denture specialist after the healing period so that you have that tooth (or teeth) replaced. Although the tooth extraction procedure does not require hospital intervention, it is still a surgery and like all surgeries, you must take certain precautions during the recovery process to ensure that healing takes place without complication.

Eight steps to help your post-surgery

1. Take any prescribed medication.

2. For the first three hours after the extraction and to prevent bleeding, you should bite down firmly on the gauze which is placed on the extraction site. You can change the gauze if necessary and remove it after three hours.

3. Refrain from exercising for two days and avoid activities such as weight lifting, running or any other such activity that could cause a clog in your mouth.

4. Be careful of what you eat and drink, it is not recommended to eat hot meals as the stitches in your mouth could dissolve prematurely. Soft and cold foods such as yogurts and pudding are better options for the first two days. Wait a few days before eating food such as steak, apples, corn etc that requires chewing.

5. Do not smoke for the first 48 hours to keep any chance of inflammation away.

6. When brushing and flossing your teeth, take care of the extraction site and use a mixture of salt and warm water to rinse your mouth (half a teaspoon of salt to one cup of water).

7. Apply an ice bag on the area (on your face) as soon as you arrive home to avoid swelling.

8. When sleeping or lying down, place your head in an upper position to avoid any risk of bleeding.

Is it normal to feel pain after I recover from the local anesthesia?

Remember that for the extraction procedure an anesthesia will be administered to numb the area and the effect will pass some hours after when you are at home. Some discomfort is to be expected and should not be cause for alarm. Your dentist/denture specialist will recommend a painkiller which you should take just once. Do not self-medicate without the advice of the professional who carried out the procedure.

It’s still hurting! What should I do?

If you suspect that you are feeling a stronger pain than expected, give your dentist a call. If you are having nausea, vomiting, have signs of inflammation, redness or excessive swelling on the area, book a consultation so that a specialist can examine you. Normal recovery is expected to take about two weeks for the gum to cover the area.

Keep in mind to follow all of the above steps as well as the care routine established by your dentist or denture specialist. And If you know anyone that is recovering from a tooth extraction procedure, please share this article with them!
