Full set of Dentures
The Wear and Tear of Old Dentures

What Are The Main Causes Of Wear And Tear On Old Dentures?

One of the most common issues our clinicians come across more often is the wear and tear of old dentures. The majority of cases we see from people who come to Dental Tech Group are seeking help for loose dentures. This occurs because the teeth themselves are worn down.

Acrylic teeth may look like natural teeth but they are acrylic and therefore unlike natural teeth. They can wear down and become flat over time, causing all sorts of issues for our mouth and body. This is a process that develops over years from using the dentures every day. Usually the occlusal surface of the back teeth becomes flat. This creates a gap between the upper teeth and lower teeth so when we close fully, all the way down the back teeth don’t meet.

  • This causes the dentures to move when we chew specially the bottom ones.
  • This problem also has an impact on overall health as the lack of sharpness on the teeth affects the digestive system. This happens because the food is not chewed correctly.
  • Another outcome of lack of sharpness of the teeth can cause pain and wear on the TMJ. This is the joint that we have in the jaw connecting our top jaw to the bottom jaw.
  • Not to mention the unnecessary mouth ulcers and how irritating it can be trying to eat in public.

Luckily this is a problem that is very easy to fix; a new set of dentures will provide teeth that are anatomically correct, as nature intended. The teeth are designed to interlock with each other so that when we close down the back upper teeth will occlude perfectly with the lower back teeth. This process allows the top teeth to push the lower denture down and allows the lower teeth to push the upper dentures up, as the teeth interlock with each other it prevents any rocking movement.

These are the most rewarding cases we get as we can see the huge difference that their new teeth can provide. Not just from the level of comfort but the improvement on the quality of life.

“I can’t wait to see our patients on the review day, a few weeks after the fitting, when they tell me the significant impact that the new teeth are having in their lives. From eating, smiling and socializing.” Mario shares.
