Tips For Transitioning To Dentures For The First Time
If you’re transitioning to dentures for the first time, or even if you’ve had dentures for a long time, you might find the tips useful!
People wear dentures to replace lost or missing teeth so they can enjoy a healthy diet and smile with confidence. Dentures with poor fit can create painful sores that may turn into infections, making it difficult to eat and speak. You might end up feeling less confident whensmiling, avoidwearing your dentures, get unhealthy eating habits, loseweight and other problems.
Give it time
New Dentures require time for the denture wearer to get used to them. New dentures may feel a bit unusualat first. They might need someadjusting from your denturist after the first fitting. However, there should be no soreness, only the feeling of it being unusual as its new to fitting in places that your old dentures were no longer fitting.
Arrange an adjustment
If you get sores on your gums or tongue, don’t ignore them. You should arrange an appointment immediately with your denturistto re-adjust the denture. Itonly takes a few minutes to adjust and that’s what your aftercareservice is for.
Give your gums a break
Don’t forget to remove the dentures for some time during the day. We recommend removing your dentures during the night, so that gums can relaxand breath.
Losing or gaining weight can affect your denture’s fit. In case you have significant weight changes, you should arrange an appointment with one of our denturistsfor any adjustments that might be needed.
Clean your dentures and gums regularly
Wash your dentures in warm soapy water at least Twice a day in a large plastic bowl,so that you remove any bacteria and food particles. Don’t forget the gums! Remember to always give the mouth a gentle brush and/or rinse when taking out the dentures; if possible, massage the gums with a washcloth or a soft toothbrush. Use a pea sized amount of toothpaste and gently rub around the inside of the cheeks, gums and tongue to stimulate them and help promote a healthy mouth.
Don’t overdo it with denture adhesive
Denture adhesive can work well when used in the right portion; a small pea sized amount. Keep in mind that applying more adhesive than directed won’t improve a poor fitting denture. If you are applying more than one or two pea sized amounts, you need to book in for a denture review as your denture is not fitting.
